Background of the Study
Efik, spoken predominantly in Cross River State, has experienced significant morphological changes over time, driven by internal evolution and external influences. Diachronic studies of Efik morphology reveal shifts in affixation patterns, inflectional paradigms, and compounding strategies (Udoh, 2023). Historical records, combined with modern spoken data, show how colonial contact, educational policies, and urbanization have contributed to morphological simplification and innovation (Obong, 2024). Researchers have employed both traditional comparative methods and recent computational tools to document these changes, yet gaps remain in linking historical data with current usage (Eten, 2025). This study examines the diachronic morphological evolution of Efik, analyzing linguistic corpora spanning several centuries. By comparing older forms with contemporary language, the research aims to trace morphological shifts and identify patterns of change that may reflect broader cultural and social transformations. This analysis is critical for understanding the evolution of Efik and for informing language preservation and teaching strategies in Cross River State.
Statement of the Problem
Although Efik morphology has undergone significant changes, there is a lack of comprehensive diachronic studies that integrate historical records with modern usage (Udoh, 2023). Existing research often treats morphological change in isolation, without linking it to broader sociolinguistic trends (Obong, 2024). This fragmentation limits our understanding of how and why Efik morphology has evolved. The absence of integrated, longitudinal data hinders effective language teaching and preservation initiatives. Addressing this gap is essential to provide a clearer picture of Efik’s morphological evolution and to support efforts aimed at maintaining the language’s structural integrity.
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of Efik’s morphological evolution, offering insights that are crucial for linguistic theory and language preservation. Understanding these changes will support educational initiatives and contribute to the development of effective language policies in Cross River State. The research findings will benefit linguists, educators, and cultural preservationists by ensuring that the structural integrity of Efik is maintained for future generations.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses solely on diachronic morphological changes in Efik in Cross River State and does not address other linguistic aspects.
